eMagine

eMagine is an annually held competition at Olathe Northwest High School. The four main categories consist of Graphic Design, Web Design, Video, and Animation. Within those categories there are subcategories. For example, Graphic Design has four categories including Print Media, Vector, Typography, and Digital Photo Manipulation. Each of the top five in each category is announced and shown up on the big screen to the crowd. Then, the top three of each category get announced and the winners go up to accept their award. The last award presented is the Best of Show, which consist of the overall winners in their respected categories.

I myself only entered one piece this year into the Print Media category and placed second place out of the top five. I was surprised with this outcome because I did not have a lot of time to prepare what I wanted to work on. But was still proud when I received second place and went up to accept my award. I do have some ideas for next year which I hope to enter at least two pieces, if not four (one in each category).

Overall eMagine was a great experience and I can't wait till next year to go again and hopefully win another award or two or three or four...

The piece I entered into the Print Media Category titled "Deep Thoughts":

About Me

Hello my name is Michael Zager and I am currently a Freshman at the University of Kansas. I am currently studying Visual Communications. Photography is one of my hobbies that I have picked up over the years. I have always been interested in photography because of my father but never knew the elements, principles, and how to compose a photo until a few years ago. Self taught, I have learned the basics of composition and the photography rules.

About e-Comm

The e-Communication program focuses on Animation, Video, Wed Design, and Graphic Design. The Graphic Design strand in the E-Communications program focuses on using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to create projects and do tutorials to further your knowledge in each program. Learning the basics of each Adobe program in the first year, then advancing your knowledge of each as you progress through your high school career gives us an advantage compared to other students going into the same college field as us. Animation focuses on the use of Maya to render images and videos created by students. The Video strand is broken up into two strands; Broadcasting and Entertainment. The Broadcast strand focuses on the use of developing skills in the broadcast field. Every few weeks they air a newscast called "ONW NOW" to show off their skills. Entertainment uses Final Cut Pro to make/edit various projects whether it be school wide or short films. Web Design, being self-explanatory, designs and codes html to make personal and professional websites for clients.
